Overview
What Is Tallow Fat Oil?
Tallow fat oil is rendered lipid extracted from beef cattle and sheep by-products through the rendering process. It is one of the oldest and most established lipid feedstocks in the biofuel industry, offering high calorific value, stable fatty acid composition and well-understood processing characteristics.
Tallow is classified as an Annex IX Part B feedstock under EU RED III — it qualifies for double-counting towards renewable energy mandates. Unlike Category 1 & 2 animal fats, tallow rendered from Category 3 materials (food-grade slaughter operations) can serve both the feed and fuel markets, providing broader supply availability.
SUAT Fuels sources tallow from rendering facilities in Spain, Ireland, Germany and South America, with ISCC EU and ISCC CORSIA certification covering all supply chains.
Key Advantages
Why Tallow Fat Oil for Renewable Fuels?
Annex IX Part B
Double-counted under EU RED III. Eligible for HVO, HEFA-SAF and advanced biodiesel mandate claims. ISCC EU and CORSIA certified by SUAT Fuels.
High Calorific Value
Energy content 35–37 MJ/kg. High cetane precursor content ideal for HVO hydrotreating. Saturated fatty acid profile (C16:0, C18:0) well-suited to renewable diesel production.
74–82% GHG Savings
GREET model lifecycle GHG: 12–19 g CO₂e/MJ for tallow-based renewable diesel. Equivalent to 74–82% reduction vs petroleum diesel (85–90 g CO₂e/MJ).
Stable Global Supply
Major supply from EU rendering industry (EFPRA members), North America and rapidly growing South American exports (Brazil, Argentina). Well-established trading market with liquid pricing.

Compliance
Regulatory Status & Certifications
EU RED III — Annex IX Part B
- Annex IX Part B waste feedstock — double-counted towards EU renewable energy targets when sourced from Cat 1&2 or equivalent waste-classified materials
- Tallow from Cat 3 (food-grade) slaughter operations is conventional (single-counted) — SUAT clearly distinguishes supply grade in all documentation
- ISCC EU and ISCC CORSIA certification covers all tallow supply chains traded by SUAT Fuels
- ABP species declarations and transformation certification required for EU cross-border movements
- ISCC CORSIA pathway enables tallow-based HEFA-SAF sustainability claims for ICAO compliance
End Uses
Applications
HVO / Renewable Diesel
Primary and fastest-growing use. Saturated fatty acid profile produces high-quality HVO with excellent cold flow properties. Processed by Neste, ENI, Preem and others.
HEFA-SAF
ISCC CORSIA certified tallow pathway for sustainable aviation fuel. Growing demand from airline SAF procurement programmes targeting Annex IX Part B supply.
FAME Biodiesel
Requires acid esterification pre-treatment for high-FFA grades. Blended with liquid feedstocks for FAME production. Well-established EU market.
Industrial Applications
Competing demand from oleochemicals, lubricants and animal feed (Cat 3 grade). Biofuel market competes with these sectors for Cat 3 tallow supply.
Supply Geography
Origins & Availability
EU supply from EFPRA-member rendering plants across Spain, Ireland, Germany, Netherlands and Poland. South American exports growing rapidly — Brazil and Argentina are significant exporters following increased cattle processing. SUAT provides full origin traceability and species declarations for all supply.
