What is F-76 fuel?


F-76 fuel (also searched as F76 fuel or naval distillate) is the NATO naval distillate specified by MIL-DTL-16884 / DEF STAN 91-086. It powers marine gas turbines and diesel engines on warships, submarines and support vessels, not aviation turbines.

Compared with commercial marine gas oil, F-76 fuel tightens sulfur (typically ≤15 ppm), cetane (≥45) and storage-stability limits for long deployments. Flash point stays at a shipboard-safe minimum of 60°C.

F-76 vs JP-5

Both share a ≥60°C flash-point floor for shipboard fire safety, but they are different products: F-76 = naval distillate for ship engines; JP-5 = carrier aviation kerosene. Do not interchange them.
